Ringa Ringa Ringa

February 21, 2009

The one saving grace of Slum Dog Millionaire. Slum Dog’s a crappy movie. And if you have watched the movie there is a lot of crapin it,  sometimes quite literally. I am not sure why the West would still lap a movie on “Mumbai’s underbelly”. So what is it like? Slumdog aint mumbai’s underbelly. It’s more like a Mumbai’s penis or vagina or the ass crack, I think. Sadly if the ass crack is what Danny Boyle wanted to depict in Slumdog, he could atleast have chosen a strong script and hired some quality actors. Instead he chooses a crappy story line and hires some extremely average actors who look very souless throughout the movie. It’s entirely possible thier acting sucks coz thier characters are weak and superficial. It is quite strange such a movie is winning accolades overseas. The white director understandably hasnt quite understood the asscrack of Mumbai. He mistook it to be an underbelly and presented it as one. This has been the greatest undoing of the movie. Nothing is quite right about it. I thought even A R Rahman sucked with “Jai Ho”. And just when I thought the great Music master has utterly failed “ringa ringa ringa” comes on. It is a delightfully catchy song. You know one of those songs that you fall in love with at the very first time. The only nice thing about Slumdog is this one extremely hummable delightful song. I hope he does get an Oscar even if it is for “Jai Ho”. He deserves it.

DEV D or the modern devdas?

February 8, 2009

Dev D, the movie starring Abhay Deol is pure cinematic brilliance. It is the director Anurag Kashyap that brings a fresh look for a Bollywood movie. of course Abhay as an actor is fantastic in the movie and so is the woman who plays Paro. equally brilliant is the chnadramukhi or chanda rather. It is a brilliantly made film, with starking contrasts. The extreme contrast that movie potrays time and again is just plain thrilling. Imagine a phoren-looking(read white looking) young girl with all phoren morals and accent to boot in a tiny village in Punjab. well even for a few minutes that contrast is quite intriguing.  this movie is dark, it’s funny too at times but again in a dark way. Dont expect to have a light fun time. This one racks your brain. It’s artistic too with all that p[owerful background music. Just amazing.

However it does not make sense in at all in many ways. for example, you never know why the dude, abhay rejects paro in the first place. in the original devdas, paro had to give up devdas to satisfy her mommy. but devdas never rejected her. in this case our abhay rejects paro for no aaparent reason. well that’s just plain mindfucking. it is also very immature coz all the there main (dev, paro and chanda) characters keep mindfucking each other. for what? i just didnt quite get it. the story just doesnt make any sense.  but then I am a “free-spirited” extreme liberal, so I may be missing something here that the majority of the population connects to quite easily.

Regardless, it is a brilliant novel approach to make film and I admire it for that. This one is a must watch.

Is there a glass cieling?

February 1, 2009

Am always extra careful when working with women. They are just incredibly difficult to deal with as if they come with some baggage. Now there are lots of men with issues too but generally they have a certain sense of fairness that you talk to. Women are just there and want to be treated “special”. And they toss their hair or curl up thier funny lips or wear something inappropriate which makes you take them less seriously. They laugh or smile too much and pretend it’s perfectly acceptable to do so. Except it isn’t. I am only generalizing here because I am aware of the 10% of women at work who do their jobs exceptionally well and get way ahead of any man. And they are women have reached the top of their respective professions. This isn’t about them. This is about your average woman who just happens to take her job as if it is an add-on, an accessory where as for most men it is a need and they prove it by thier nonsense attitude(yeah yeah i know there playful ugly ones too but they wont get far with that attitude). And they wonder “if there is glass ceiling”. It’s in your head woman. Stick to your job and make a little more effort than your male counterparts and you are well set. In my observation, women still have to prove that they are better than men and a large part of it is to be blamed on these large percentage of women who just dont do thier jobs with all the sincerity that needs to go into it. I mean it is okay, if you want to do a secretarial job and remain that way throughout your entire life(nothing wrong in that either) however if you want to move up the ladder, there are only two words–man up.
