GPRS Settings for Idea cellular on HTC Hero

I struggled quite a bit to set  the gprs up and going on my HTC hero. I use Idea cellular in Maharashtra. So I am gonna do you a favor and tell you how to set it up. First call your customer care and ask them to activate gprs for your number. They will ask your handset type to send you the gprs settings and when you say HTC Hero thier minds go blank(am assuming this is because it is a new model and not yet in thier database). Any way tell them it is HTC, a PDA.

You will get a message that will tell you how to enter the settings manual. basically I did this for my Hero.

Menu->Settings->Wire less controls->Mobile Network Settings-> Acess Point Names-> New APN

it will bring up a menu. In that enter APN Name as “internet” (without the quotes ofcourse). Thats it, leave all the other fields blank. Then Press Menu->Save. Thats it!!!!!!!! You are all set to enjoy GPRS on your phone.

My HTC Hero

I got a HTC Hero last week. I was debating between iPhone 3g (not 3gs as it is not available in India yet, you suck Apple!!!).  But what made me go for HTC hero is probably that it has Andriod and iPhone 3g is so last year. Hero is brand new model. However if iPhone 3gs was available for a simlar price I guess I would have got that.

I am happy with my Hero. It isnt laggy like they say all over the internet. Thats because my hero has the ROM update installed already. So I didnt face any performance issues. However for fun I did root my Hero and installed Modaco ROM v2. It was fun. I dont notice any performance improvement with Modaco but then like I said my Hero had an optimized ROM already. I bet I could never do such cool stuff with an iPhone 3gs which is locked as hell. So I am happy with my choice. The music player is surprisingly very good. Love it. The browser is adorable. You can pinch and zoom just like the iPhone. That’s what I always wanted in a phone, a easy to use browser and this one does the job perfectly.

Now what do I hate about it? The camera. Dont be fooled by its 5 mega pixels. I had a k790i sony erricsson before and it’s camera was fantastic and it had a powerful flash too. The Hero takes lousy photos and it has no flash. A real drawback since I love taking photos impromtu. Other than that I find this phone perfect.
